What is a Vault reset, and how does the process work?
A Vault reset clears and permanently wipes all data in the Vault, returning it to its initial empty state. Here are the scenarios where a reset may be needed:
- Forgot Vault Password but still have the Recovery Key: No reset is required — use your Recovery Key to reset your Password directly. Your data will not be lost. See "What should I do if I forget my Password?"
- Lost both Vault Password and Recovery Key: The Vault cannot be unlocked. A reset is the only way to continue using the Vault, and all data inside will be permanently erased.
- Reset while the Vault is unlocked: If you wish to wipe all Vault data, you can initiate a reset from Settings.
There are two ways to reset the Vault. In both cases, all files inside the Vault are permanently wiped after the reset and cannot be recovered.
Scenario 1: Reset while the Vault is unlockedInside the Vault, go to Settings > Reset Vault. After confirming the risk, the reset executes immediately — no grace period is required.
Scenario 2: Lost both Vault Password and Recovery Key (cannot unlock)This is the last resort. The process has 4 steps:
Step 1 — Risk acknowledgment: confirm that all data will be permanently erased before proceeding.
Step 2 — Identity verification: verify your identity via your linked phone number or email address.
Step 3 — Grace period (7 days): after submitting, a 7-day waiting period begins. You can cancel at any time. The system sends an email notification when the request is submitted and again 24 hours before execution.
Step 4 — Reset complete: after the grace period ends, the reset executes automatically and the Vault returns to its initial empty state.
